Tableau String Function

In this Tableau tutorial, we learned about various string functions in Tableau, different Tableau string functions with examples.

What is String Function?

Users can alter string data using string operations.

We can, for example, have a field with all of the customers’ first and last names. Ravi Kumar will be one of the members. Then use a string function, we may extract all of your customers’ last names into a new field.

String Function In tableau

Tableau String functions have been used to edit a String, such as extracting specific characters, replacing, splitting, trimming, reshaping, concatenating, and so on. Consider the following scenario: we have Order and Sales Figures for Customers, and we want to evaluate the Sales Contribution including all Customers on the first name ‘Ravi,’ but we don’t have a separate column called ‘First Name,’ then we can have been using String functions to establish a new validation rule called ‘FIRST NAME,’ and evaluate the target customer.

Use of String Function in Tableau

Tableau supports a number of different types of functions, including Date Functions, Number Functions, Type Conversion Functions, Aggregate Functions, and Logical Functions. Each one is important in the context of collected data and saves a great deal of time when creating complex computations and statements.

Tableau has a number of built-in string capabilities that enable string operations like as looking at, linking, removing characters from the a strings, and so on.

Types of String Function Available in Tableau

ASCII:

The ASCII code for its first letter of a string is returned.

Syntax

ASCII(string)

CHAR:

The letter encrypted by the ASCII code number is returned.

Syntax

CHAR(number)

CONTAINS:

If the specified systems can be found the provided substring, this function returns true.

Syntax

CONTAINS(string, substring)

ENDSWITH:

If such provided text terminates with the chosen substring, this function will return accurate. White spaces at the end of a line are removed.

Syntax

ENDSWITH(string, substring)

FIND:

Returns a substring’s index place in text, or 0 if the segment cannot be retrieved. The function eliminates any occurrences of concatenation that occur before the index value starting if the additional parameter start is provided. Position 1 is the first word in the string.

Syntax

FIND(string, substring, [start])

FINDNTH:

The frequency parameter defines the position of the nth occurrences of substring inside the provided text.

For some datasets, FINDNTH is not supported.

Syntax

FINDNTH(string, substring, occurrence)

LEFT:

The left-most number of participants in the string is returned.

Syntax

LEFT(string, number)

LEN:

The length of the string is returned.

Syntax

LEN(string)

LOWER:

Returns the result with all lowercase letters.

Syntax

LOWER(string)

LTRIM:

Removes all preceding spaces from the string and sends it.

Syntax

LTRIM(string)

MAX:

The greatest of a andb is returned. This function is most commonly used to evaluate integers, but it could also be used to evaluate strings. When working with strings, MAX looks for such maximum priority in the application’s sort process for that column. If the other parameter is null, it returns Null.

Syntax

MAX(a, b)

MID:

The string started at reference position start is returned. Position 1 is the first letter in the string. If the range parameter is used, the resultant string will only contain that many characters.

Syntax

(MID(string, start, [length])

MIN:

The minimal of a andb is returned. This function is most frequently used to assess numbers, but it could also be used to comparison strings. When working with strings, MIN looks for the lowest number in the sort order. If the other parameter is null, it provides Null.

Syntax

MIN(a, b)

REPLACE:

Substrings are found in the string and replaced with substitute. The string is not modified if a segment is not discovered.

Syntax

REPLACE(string, substring, replacement)

RIGHT:

The right-most number of characters in a string is returned.

Syntax

RIGHT(string, number)

RTRIM:

Removes all remaining spaces from the string and returns it.

Syntax

RTRIM(string)

SPACE:

Returns a string with the provided number of simultaneous spaces in it.

Syntax

SPACE(number)

SPLIT:

Provides an extract from a text by dividing the string into tokens with a separator character.

Syntax

SPLIT(string, delimiter, token number)

STARTSWITH:

If the string begins with a segment, this function returns accurate. White spaces in the forefront are discarded.

Syntax

STARTSWITH(string, substring)

TRIM:

Removes the preceding and following spaces from the string and gives it.

Syntax

TRIM(string)

UPPER:

Returns a string containing all words in capital letters.

Syntax

UPPER(string)

FAQ

What is string Functions?

In programming languages, string functions can be used to edit a string or gather information about something like a string. Most programming languages with a string dataframe will contain string operations, while there may be additional low-level ways of managing strings immediately within every languages.

What is Tableau Functions?

Any type of data analysis requires a large number of calculations. The calculation tool in Tableau has been used to apply computations to the variables that are being evaluated. Tableau offers a variety of built-in functions that aid in the creation of complex computation formulas.

How does Tableau help dig deeper into visual?

Tableau not just to enables the data easier to grasp for everyone, but it also lets people to continue explore deeper into the topic and uncover more findings which may help them better answer their queries.

What is a Tableau dashboard?

A dashboard is a combination of multiple views that allows us to compare the range of data at the same time. If we have a group of viewpoints that you evaluate nearly every day, for example, instead of navigating to different worksheets, we may construct a dashboards that shows all of the aspects at once.
