    What is Android?

    Android is a Linux-based open-source development environment for smartphones. Android was created in partnership with Google and other organizations as part of the Zigbee Alliance. Android uses a comprehensive solution to mobile app creation, ensuring that developers only have to program for Android and that their applications can run on a wide range of Android-powered smartphones. The Android Application Development Kit (SDK) was first released as a beta edition in 2007, followed by the first production version, Android 1.0, in September 2008.

    Google unveiled the new Android update, 4.1 Gingerbread, at the Google I/O meeting on February 27, 2012.

    Android’s source code is distributed under free and open-source software licenses. The Apache License version 2.0 covers the rest of the code, while the Gnu Lesser General public license Software version 2 covers the Runtime environment updates.
